vMemory™ - WHAT CAN YOU DO WITH I/O ANYWHERE?
Pcion's i-PCI vMemory™ allows remote I/O peripherals to be local memory mapped resources when leveraging networked connections. Principle applications of vMemory™ apply to memory mapped expansion boards, network bridges and switches, remote bus network adapter boards, and other memory resource components. Operating system memory and storage are also remotely accessible through the vMemory™ interface. With vMemory™, I/O Anywhere™ becomes a reality.
vMemory™ Technology Overview:
I/O Anywhere™ describes what vMemory™ is all about. No longer is a system designer constrained by physical distance limitations as dictated by a particular I/O standard. The vMemory™ protocol extends a PCIe I/O system via an IP network, an Ethernet link, or Direct Connect Ethernet physical layer link. The vMemory™ protocol allows functions or adapter cards to be located geographically remote, via any one of three implementation options, yet appear as local bus resources.
vMemory™ Application Example:
Imagine the power and freedom of being able to extend the native architecture – the very fabric of a computer system – over an Ethernet network or even the Internet. With vMemory™, the world is the realm and the reach of the embedded system designer. It is within the scope of vMemory™ to serve as the virtualization foundation for everything I/O - from consumer-oriented I/O protocols such as USB and Firewire to niche protocols, embedded functions, and industrial PCI implementations such as cPCI and PICIMG 1.3. Thus a single board computer in Omaha can extend its architecture to include an DAQ card in Taipei, a SCSI drive in California, and a Firewire camera in New York.
